Room to grow. That’s exactly what Buyer Mason Schiff was looking for when he came to work for Steffes in 2019.
Three years ago, Mason was approached by one of his best friends – the best man in his wedding, to be exact – about applying for a position at Steffes. “Brandon thought I might be interested and threw out the idea of a buyer position,” said Mason. “I was looking for somewhere that I’d be able to learn and grow. I knew that Steffes was growing fast, and there would be opportunities there for me.”
After graduating from the University of Mary with a degree in business administration, Mason decided to move back home to Dickinson to be closer to his family and his now-wife, Andrea. He worked for his family’s electric business before joining the Steffes family.
As a buyer, Mason is responsible for ensuring that our production teams have the materials they need to manufacture and assemble products for our oil and gas customers. He monitors a material resource planning system that shows the material demand, places purchase orders, and works with suppliers to ensure deliveries are made accurately and efficiently.
Initially, his primary responsibilities were focused mainly on procurement and purchasing. As he has grown in his role and has developed an understanding of the products and processes used in the oil and gas division at Steffes, he is now involved in driving process improvements. As he works to help make processes more efficient and accurate, he is involved in supplier business reviews to evaluate supplier metrics, address performance issues, provide forecast information, and help develop relationships with our suppliers.
“The current global supply chain constraints have caused material delays and outages,” said Mason. “I work with our suppliers and the Steffes team to come up with solutions, whether that is finding a different source, expediting, or finding alternative options. I am closely connected with our suppliers and am invested in the relationships we have. I am in constant contact with them to ensure Steffes’s material needs are met.”
As he looks to the future at Steffes, Mason is excited about continuing to develop better and deeper relationships with our suppliers. He is also looking forward to helping develop process improvements that will strengthen the supply chain team internally.
“I enjoy getting the opportunity to learn and grow by being challenged in a multitude of ways. It is a good feeling knowing that the work I do means something, and it can help Steffes be successful.”
When asked what he enjoys most about working for Steffes, he quickly responded, “The people. The people around you support you and trust you and your abilities and allow you to grow. Everyone respects one another and wants to help. It’s a good team environment, and we are all working toward one goal.”
Mason enjoys golfing with his wife, bird hunting with his dog Rawlings, bow hunting, and coaching baseball for the local high school in his free time. However, life just got a bit busier as Mason and Andrea welcomed their first child, daughter Madelyn Jo, just three weeks ago.
Congratulations to the Schiffs, and thank you for being a part of Team Steffes!
